1st NIGERIAN ENVIRONMENTAL LAW AND MANAGEMENT SUMMIT

Theme:            Uniting the Disciplines for Environmental Justice

September 2008, Abuja  Nigeria.

Environmental Law and Management Association

In collaboration with

El-ABSU Environmental Law Clinic

The environmental problems of Nigeria and the West Africa sub region have reached an alarming dimension. Most of the problems are not unconnected to the unprecedented industrial and urban growth which has increased threats to the environment and public health. Still yet some of our traditional practices have been identified as gradually destroying the ecosystem and endangering both human and other habitation.  In the face the problems, we could do something. The critical need to protect our environment has reached a crucial moment. The ELMA Summit 2008 hopes to assemble from the West African sub region, environmentalists and experts from all relevant fields, to initiate a dialogue on the available opportunities of unifying forces to protect the environment.

Environmental Law and Management Association is growing rapidly in countries around the world, creating an important vehicle for delivering national and sub regional responses to environmental and public health problems. The conference will spur that growth, providing a forum for national and sub regional as well as international cooperation and the exchange of ideas that will lead to dramatic legal, management and policy transformations around the sub region.

The Summit

The Summit is informed by the need to bring together environmentalists from different fields, environmental professionals and practitioners including lawyers, scientists, economists, the media, academia, non governmental organizations (NGOs) and other actors and activists in the environmental field.

The objectives:

(1) to pursue a unified examination of environmental law and management as well environmental issues generally, and

(2)  to chart a course to protect the environment and ensure that the interests of the environment and socio-economic development do not conflict.

Themes;

1.         Environmental Justice and Environmental Democracy

2.         Climate Change

3.         Environment and civil society
